We at LOCKUM decided to try and find a solution to this ever increasing problem of stolen license plate. We went to my local auto supply store to see what was available to prevent (or deter) the theft of license plates and registration tags (or both). We did find bolts that required an Allen wrench and bolts that require “star” style screw drivers. The tools to remove these bolts are found at any hardware store. Also available were plastic license plate shield covers.
We spent many nights finding the best way to securely “lock on” license plates and protect registration tags from theft. After months of research, we designed a legal solution using unbreakable Lexan windows that cover only the registration tag without blocking plate numbers or letters. By preventing access to the screws and bolts, we stop most theft before it starts.

The California State Legislation allowed the amendment of the old laws to regarding what can and cannot be placed on or around the license plate and registration tags to prevent stolen license plates . Amended in Senate (via CA. State Legislation) April 29, 1999. Senate bill #532 section 8 – section 5201 of the vehicle code has been changed to allow unbreakable Lexan windows that covers directly over the registration tags. (No other license plate numbers or letters shall be covered.) We hope by giving you this information that you will make the right choice in choosing the right and legal way to protect your license plate and registration tags.
All of our frames are 100% legal in CA. (Senate Bill 532 section 8) for all other states we do not believe that law enforcement will ask you to remove the small piece of unbreakable “lexan” that is protecting your registration “sticker tags” as they do not cover over any license plate numbers or letters. These small “lexan windows” can always be removed if need be. And your license plates will still be locked on.
